About EHSAN

EHSAN is a non- profit, non-governmental, and professionally-oriented umbrella organization for all scientists, including academics, researchers and industrialists in the field of Environmental Health. It is an organization committed to being a world-class organization leading the drive to ensure a healthy Nigerian society through effective and efficient environmental health management.

EHSAN was established on June 5, 1995, by a group of six graduate students in the pioneer class of Master of Public Health (Environmental Health) programme in the then Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The Association has members across the country and currently has a student wing known as the Environmental Health Students’ Association. EHSAN is duly registered with Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission with registration number CAC/IT/NO 81569 and an academic member of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) based in the UK.

The Association has over the years contributed immensely to the development and growth of the Environmental Health profession; engaged in action-oriented, evidence-based and resource-driven environmental health activities at the community level; increased the relevance and visibility of Environmental Health Science through strategic linkages and partnerships, and promoted scholarship and leadership amongst young environmental health scientists in various institutions of learning in Nigeria.

Some of the significant landmarks and milestones recorded by the Association include pioneering the commemoration of the World Environment Day and World Environmental Health Day Celebrations in Oyo State; initiating the establishment of Youth Environment Scout (YES) Clubs in Schools; staging of the annual conference on Environmental Health Sciences (CEHS), and the annual publication of the African Journal of Environmental Health Sciences (AJEHS), a peer-reviewed journal that disseminates quality research findings from Nigeria, member countries of African Academy of Environmental Health Sciences, and globally. The association has also partnered with the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in organizing the monthly distinguished lecture series (DLS).

The association is governed at the National level by the National Executive Council and at the regional and state levels by the regional coordinators and State executives respectively. This is hinged on the need to decentralize leadership and organizational structure of the organization, which like other frontline associations is expected to drive scientific activities of the profession in Nigeria as well as give meaning, depth, and credence to the association.
